
Joy Buolamwini, a senior, is a top student with an extraordinary talent for computer programming. She received the William H. Sweet Award for Academic Excellence three years in a row. She has taken several Advanced Placement and Honors courses, receiving A's in each one. She is an AP Scholar with Distinction. She won five awards with her programming team at the University of Memphis Programming Challenge competition.
She was chosen to attend the Governor's School for Engineering, where she earned six hours of college credit. She received Gold Medals on the National Latin Exams I and II. She also received a first place in statistics at the Brownsville Regional Math Competition. She placed second in the state for a web design contest. She finished in the top 10 in the nation for the National Junior Classic League web design contest. She was named a National Achievement Merit Scholar Award Winner for Tennessee.
She is an executive board member of the Beta Club and former president of the Junior Classic League. She also is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta math competition team and a member of the basketball, cross country, and track teams. Joy has a passion for computer science. In her "spare" time, she works as a webmaster. She redesigned the school's website, which now includes more than 500 pages.
Currently, she is donating her time and skills to develop a website for World Cause, a non-profit organization founded by two Memphis high school students. Joy also donated her time as a nursery worker and helped with Vacation Bible School at Life Church. She helped with Special Olympics and volunteered for "Back to School Bash" to help underprivileged children.
