is the first Greek-lettered sorority established and incorporated by African-American college women. Led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by nine students. The sorority incorporated on January 29, 1913. The founders and incorporators were students at one of the top two historically black colleges in the nation, at a time when only one-third of 1% of African Americans of eligible age attended any college.
The leadership the sixteen exhibited in setting up the sorority has created social and economic capital for almost one hundred years. African American sororities in college and afterward supported women "to create spheres of influence, authority and power within institutions that traditionally have allowed African Americans and women little formal authority and real power."
Alpha Kappa Alpha will celebrate a centennial anniversary on January 15, 2008. Consisting of women of African, Caucasian, Asian, and Hispanic descent, the sorority serves through a membership of more than 200,000 women in over 950 chapters in the United States and several other countries. Women may join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through a graduate chapter, after acquiring a college degree.
Dinner with Barack: Two Teachers, an Army Veteran, a Small Business
Owner, and The President
Four Obama 2012 supporters had the chance to sit down for dinner with President Obama:
Juanita from Colorado, Ken from Arizona, Casey from Minnesota and Wendi from Indiana. They all
brought their stories and ideas for this campaign and our country. Juanita, a retired public
school teacher, shared her concerns on public education. The President shared what a typical
day in the White House looks like for him, how he does Halloween with his family, and how his
father impacted him.
