Maafa is a Kiswahili term for disaster, calamity or terrible occurrence. Many think of slavery or Maafa is a tragedy to be ashamed of or forgotten, a negative issue that must be whispered in polite society; something in the far distant past. The Transatlantic Slave Trade transformed the modern world and left a terrible legacy.
However, from the ashes of inhumanity, the challenge for oppressed people is to unite and return humanity to the World, so that the legacy of the past will never be part of the future. Oppressed people's suffering offers an empathy that is critical in understanding and addressing the issues of social imbalance and injustice Worldwide.
